Five Reasons Why You Should Stop Following & Listening To So-Called Business Gurus, Leaders & Influencers

Following and listening to many so-called business gurus, leaders and influencers can be tempting, as they often present themselves as experts with the answers to all of your problems. However, there are several reasons why it may be beneficial to stop following these individuals and instead focus on developing your own unique business strategy.

Some business leaders, gurus, and influencers are individuals who use their positions of power and influence to harm others, often through manipulative or unethical behaviour. This can include things like bullying, harassment, discrimination, and deceitful business practices. It’s important to be aware of these types of individuals and to avoid supporting or following them, both for the sake of others and for the sake of one’s own well-being and success.

Firstly, many of these individuals provide generic advice that is not tailored to a specific business or industry. They may offer broad, one-size-fits-all solutions that may not be applicable to the unique challenges and opportunities of your business. For example, a guru who preaches the importance of aggressive growth at all costs may not take into account the potential negative consequences, such as sacrificing company culture or profitability. Therefore, it’s important to be cautious of generic advice and to think critically about how it applies to your specific business.

Secondly, many such gurus make unrealistic promises or guarantees of success that are not backed by evidence or data. They may claim that their strategies will lead to overnight success or that they have a secret formula for success. They may use their platform to push their own products, books, courses, or consulting services, rather than providing unbiased advice. Additionally, they may be incentivized to promote certain products or services, even if they are not the best fit for you. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of potential conflicts of interest and to take any advice they give with a grain of salt.

Fourthly, a number of these gurus are out of touch with current trends or best practices. They may be basing their advice on outdated information or outdated strategies that are no longer relevant in today’s fast-paced environment. For example, a guru who promotes the use of traditional advertising methods such as print and TV ads may not be aware of the effectiveness and reach of digital marketing channels. Therefore, it’s important to stay informed about current trends and to be aware of how they may impact your business.

Lastly, most of these gurus may be more focused on building their personal brand than on providing valuable insights or advice. They may be more interested in building a large following or increasing their speaking fees than in providing actionable and valuable advice to their followers. Therefore, it’s important to be aware of any potential self-promotion and to focus on finding gurus who are truly passionate about helping you succeed.
